Landmarks: Unmissable Ashton - Royal Ballet and Opera
Landmarks: Unmissable Ashton brings three ballets by Frederick Ashton to the Royal Opera House in one evening. Les Rendezvous (1933) follows a group of friends meeting in a park, Symphonic Variations (1946) is a plotless work for six dancers set to César Franck, and Daphnis and Chloé (1951) tells the Greek romance of a goatherd and a shepherdess to Maurice Ravel's score, with the Royal Opera Chorus joining the orchestra.
The Royal Ballet's announced casting includes Marianela Nuñez, Vadim Muntagirov, Francesca Hayward, Marcelino Sambé, Matthew Ball, Mayara Magri, Sarah Lamb and Cesar Corrales, with Jonathan Lo conducting. Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, also created La Fille mal gardée and Marguerite and Armand, and is credited with defining the English style of ballet. The programme is a chance to see three of his key works side by side, from his early years with the Vic-Wells company to his post-war ballets.
