Madama Butterfly

If you like your live entertainment happy-sad, this is the perfect opera for you. Welcome to Puccini’s gorgeous tragedy, Madama Butterfly, back at the Royal Opera House in London from 14th March to 18th July 2024. This is the intensely moving tale of a 15 year old geisha girl who falls in love with an American naval officer, Pinkerton, and it’s probably Puccini’s best-loved opera. A long-anticipated revival of Moshe Leiser’s and Patrice Caurier’s acclaimed production, the cast varies depending on the performance.

The two main characters marry but soon afterwards Pinkerton deserts Cio-Cio-San and goes back home to the USA. She waits, pregnant and worried, sure he’ll come back to her. But when he does, three years later, he’s accompanied by his American wife Kate. The couple is keen to take Cio-Cio-San’s son Dolore back to the States with them and the heartbroken Cio-Cio-San agrees, saying a fond goodbye to her son before killing herself. The Chorus is the Royal Opera Chorus. It’s sung in Italian with English surtitles, and the Orchestra is the ROH’s own orchestra. Not to be missed!
