MADDADDAM
MADDADDAM is a ballet based on Margaret Atwood's trilogy Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood and MaddAddam. In an imagined future not far from our own, a bio-engineered pandemic has wiped out most of humanity and changed the Earth. A mixed group of survivors must find their way through a dangerous present while making sense of the past and of the science that led to the catastrophe. The production explores extinction and invention, hubris and humanity, love and loss, and is recommended for ages 16+.
The ballet is choreographed and directed by Wayne McGregor, Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet and creator of the Olivier Award-winning Chroma and Woolf Works, with an original score by Max Richter, costumes by Gareth Pugh and Atwood as creative consultant. Royal Ballet dancers listed for the run include Fumi Kaneko, Yasmine Naghdi, Matthew Ball and Marcelino Sambé, with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House playing live. Returning after its sold-out UK premiere in 2024, it is a large-scale dance adaptation of Atwood's dystopian fiction.
